Lesley Millner

Consultant Clinical Psychologist
and Chartered Psychologist

BSc (Hons) • MA • Dip.Clin.Psych • CPsychol • AFBPsS

I am a Chartered Psychologist and HCPC Practitioner Psychologist with 30 years of experience in the NHS and in private practice. Most of my working life has been spent providing assessment and psychological therapy to individuals, couples or groups of people from young adulthood upwards.

I am interested in a wide range of psychological conditions and symptoms and have particular experience in working with people experiencing emotional distress in relation to trauma (both single incident and complex, relational trauma). For many years, I worked with people who had substance misuse difficulties and those who had experienced abuse in childhood. I am interested in how what happens inside us psychologically, influences our health, wellbeing and relationships. Fundamentally, whatever concerns you have, my aim would be to help you towards a freer, more authentic emotional life; experience greater resilience and feel less overwhelmed by your difficulties.

Because my training has been diverse, I draw on a range of therapeutic models. I have experience and training in working psycho-dynamically, both long term and short term specifically Experiential Dynamic Therapy (EDT) and Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherpy (ISTDP) as well as in using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) and Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT). I am trained and fully accredited in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) and have been practicing EMDR since 2002. I obtained an MA in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in 2009.

Treatment might be open-ended or limited to a specific number of sessions. Most people are seen weekly or fortnightly but other contact arrangements can be made. I am happy to provide one-off consultations, short term or ad hoc sessions if this is appropriate. An initial assessment meeting would allow us to explore the type of interventions which might be of most benefit. If you would like to discuss the possibility of working together, please contact me to discuss.

Family support

I have experience of working with families who are undergoing major life events such as bereavement or adoption or where a loved one is undergoing mental health difficulties and advice and support is required.

Consultation, Supervision and Training

I am an experienced supervisor and trainer and am happy to be approached about particular projects or support needs.

Medico-legal work and Employment Assistance

I have many years of experience in providing assessments and treatment in relation to legal matters, insurance claims and compensation claims, industrial injury, medical negligence and work-related stress. I have undertaken training in providing expert reports. Please contact me to discuss specific requirements.

Practicalities and Contact Details:

My practice is based in Stroud , Gloucestershire. In exceptional circumstances I am able to consider home visits or sessions in other parts of Gloucestershire or in Bristol. Due to COVID 19 restrictions I have been developing the use of remote working and have found the flexibility of this method is helpful for many people.

I am registered with most major insurance providers and work with people who are funded by insurance companies, charities, local authorities etc. as well as those who self fund. I hold professional civil liability insurance and have a DBS check.
